It came to me in meditation, soft yet strong, “Do the 100 Day Project.” I instantly felt overwhelmed but a little bit curious too.
All I knew was that it was a free global art project where you do something creative daily for 5 – 10 minutes for 100 days. When I googled 100 Day Project, I was surprised to see that it started the NEXT DAY!
Feeling inspired AND intimidated, I decided to say “yes”. How could I not do it when my inner guidance was so strong?
So, I gathered together some art supplies and decided to do intuitive paintings for my 100 day project.
I had discovered intuitive painting when I was young and returned to it about 8 years ago. I loved how free and “in flow” I felt painting with non-traditional objects (around the house and in nature) and using my fingers too! It’s been a powerful tool for listening to my Big Self (some call Higher Self) who often connects with me through colors, images, and textures.
To be honest, I didn’t expect to make it through even one week. To my surprise and delight, I completed 100 intuitive paintings. I felt incredibly joyful and grateful for the journey.
I began to wonder, “What made it possible for me to complete the 100 days with joy and flow?”
Here’s what I discovered were the guiding principles that helped me complete the journey AND experience creative and life breakthroughs along the way.
1 | SET UP AN EGO FREE ZONE
Don’t let your inner critic get in the way and convince you that you’re not good enough or even creative.
Her job is to keep your life the same and to keep you in your comfort zone. Your job is to notice when your inner critic shows up and clear your space.
I started my creative time by not allowing my inner critic’s words and energy in my creative area… envisioning it being sent to another room or in nature. Then, I’d light a candle and envision my creative space glowing with positive intentions and light.
Give yourself some spaciousness where you are free of left brain analysis and judgement. Go within and give your heart a wide open space to explore your ideas, inspiration and vision.
Beyond Limits (Day 46 intuitive painting)
Wisdom Rising (Day 26 intuitive painting)
2 | COMMIT TO ONE DAY AT A TIME
Chose to be creative each day. Create one day at a time, one creation at a time.
Be committed for the long term (whether it be 100 days or whatever length of time you decide) yet keep your focus on what you’re creating today.
It’s a journey, not a race.
Savoring Slowness (Day 86 intuitive painting)
Taking Flight (Day 88 intuitive painting)
3 | BE AUTHENTIC. SHARE YOUR “UGLY ART” TOO.
What you think is a mistake might inspire someone. When you’re visible, you’re sharing your unique energy in a way only you can do. That can lead to surprising things happening, in a good way!
There were times my inner critic tried to keep me from painting and being visible. I just kept painting and sharing both my creations and my inner reflections on my Facebook page. To my surprise, people told me they looked forward to seeing the posts and it encouraged them.
Don’t let self-judgement keep you small. Be true to YOU.
Free to be Me (Day 78 intuitive painting)
Shine Your Light (Day 34 intuitive painting)
4 | FOLLOW YOUR INTUITION
Be bold and courageous in trying new materials and techniques. Take creative risks by trusting the inspiration and ideas that come through you.
When you embrace your intuition, you have access to your right brain’s superpowers of infinite imagination and creative flow.
Your intuition can also be a catalyst for creative growth and self-discovery as it takes you outside your comfort zone.
Outside your comfort zone lies your Creativity Zone.
Dare to Innovate (Day 57 intuitive painting)
Courage and Commitment (Day 93 intuitive painting)
5 | KEEP IT SIMPLE
Show up by trusting in the process AND yourself.
It’s not about being perfect. It’s about knowing that you are already perfect today and every day.
When I kept it simple, I discovered how much easier it was to stay present.
When you focus on being present over being perfect, magic happens!
Learning to Trust (Day 62 intuitive painting)
Opening to Self Love (Day 39 intuitive painting)
6 | DO IT FOR THE SHEER JOY
Don’t create for your audience, your fellow creatives, or for anyone except YOU.
I sometimes found myself wondering if someone would find the colors in my painting too bold or harsh. That’s when I’d notice my inspiration and interest would fade. Only when I brought my focus on what colors or shapes would make ME happy to paint, the creativity would flow through me again.
Make the JOY of expressing your creative spirit your top priority.
Passion Unleashed (Day 22 intuitive painting)
Blooming Brightly (Day 80 intuitive painting)
7 | GO WITH THE FLOW
Keep going even if (and ESPECIALLY if) you don’t like what you’re creating. Try stepping away from what you’re creating for a few minutes and then look at it from a different perspective.
There were times when I was painting that I thought, “I should just stop. This is a mess.” And then, I’d rotate the painting and something inspiring would jump out at me. Or I’d see an image that wasn’t there before. Then, my creativity would flow again.
Life is like that too. When you take a break and then refresh your perspective, your energy shifts. Don’t stop now. You may be on the verge of a breakthrough to a fresh, new level of creative expression!
Nurturing Creativity (Day 36 intuitive painting)
The Joy of Creation (Day 29 intuitive painting)
8 | SAY GOODBYE TO YESTERDAY’S CREATION
Set an intention to let go of yesterday’s creation and experience. Consider it complete.
Honor what and how you created it. Celebrate it if you’d like! Then, release it knowing that what you created served a purpose.
This allows you to start fresh each day with new eyes and energy. Who knows what you might create in your life and art then?!
Shaking Things Up (Day 31 intuitive painting)
Precious, Present Moment (Day 64 intuitive painting)
9 | KEEP LOVING YOURSELF
…even if you don’t love what you created. That’s especially challenging when your inner bully shows up.
That’s the part of you who focuses on what isn’t working or tries to convince you that your creation is a failure.
Instead, appreciate yourself for showing up. Focus on your inner beauty instead which will energize and inspire you more than your mind’s critique.
Bold Heart (Day 76 intuitive painting)
True Transformation (Day 99 intuitive painting)
10 | HAVE FUN!!!
Invite your inner child to play with you as you sit down to create.
Let go of expectations and be in the spirit of discovery.
There’s nothing like childlike wonder to shift from creative constipation to lighthearted flow!
Playful Pause (Day 14 intuitive painting)
The Power of Play (Day 100 intuitive painting)
Each of us is on our own journey and yet there are are common themes that support our creative and personal growth.
I hope one or more of what I’ve shared here inspires YOU on your creative and life journey!
